Our Story ...
A farm our size can produce an enormous amount of manure. We
don't mind the manure though. It composts well and we use it as
fertilizer. What we don't like are flies and stench. That's
why we use diatomaceous earth ... and we don't have fly problems
or a stench.
Diatomaceous Earth is a naturally occurring organism. Some call
it grass of the sea because it exists in the waters like grass
covers land. Diatomaceous earth consists of fossilized remains
of diatoms, a type of hard-shelled algae. Depending on the grade
of diatomaceous earth in use, its applications are widespread
... as a filtration aid, a mild abrasive, mechanical
insecticide, an absorbent for liquids, cat litter, as an
activator in blood clotting studies, and as a component of
dynamite. It's even used as a thermal insulator because of its
heat-resistance.
Our Diatomaceous Earth is so pure it's approved as food grade.
That means that you could eat it yourself, and lots of people do.
Many of us feed it to our animals to rid parasites from within the body. Any
fly or maggot that eats the manure with diatomaceous earth
dehydrates and dies ... fly problem solved. At our farm we
spread it directly over the stable floors, pens, etc. We also mix it in the feed. We have no fly
or parasite problems.
A story about using it as an internal wormer ... A friend of
ours has a daughter in 4H. She's kept her pig at our farm and
fed it small amounts of diatomaceous earth regularly. It tickles
us to think about the size of her pigs. They were HOGS! She
believes in using diatomaceous earth and has three blue ribbons
to back up her testimony.
Diatomaceous Earth is a must-have on any farm, especially farms
where the animals occupy confined spaces such as a house, pen,
stable or yard: Horses, Donkeys, Mules, Ponies, Chicken Houses,
Hogs and Pigs, Dog Kennels,
Cattle Farmers, Dairy Farms, Zoos, Wildlife Refuges, etc.
